The Primavera toile was commissioned by Anne Lockyer, the eminent interior designer, on behalf of the South Australian government, to be used as the single decorative unit in the Bicentennial Ball held at Government House, Adelaide, in September 1988. Three thousand metres draped the walls and tented the ceilings. The design brief stipulated the theme of "Youth, Spring and New Beginnings". Spring green, not in our present range, was the chosen colour.

Within the format of a classic toile, the detail of its richly variegated flora and vines is South Australian. The design was six months in research by its designer Graham Robertson, and includes references to the banksia motif from Sir Joseph Banks' famous "Florilegium", and Flora the Goddess of Flowers, from Botticelli's "Primavera" in the Uffizi. The design is now offered in nine colourways, and samples of the original have been donated to the design archives of several Australian museums, so that posterity can witness our celebration of this most auspicious year in Australia's history. |
